From the Board
With the season now well underway it's absolutely great to see a full clubhouse with plenty of support for all teams across the club.
Again we can't thank our army of volunteers (coaches, pitch maintenance, club shop etc) enough. Games would simply not be possible if it wasn't for their hard work and dedication.
We are starting to look ahead to our Centenary season, 2026, and are looking for volunteers to form a Centenary committee responsible for planning events and celebrations for the duration of the season. If you are interested please do not hesitate to contact me on chair@ormskirkrugby.co.uk
From the MJS
MJS Season Kicks Off with Success!
The season for our MJS section is off to a fantastic start following our “Registration Day” on 8th September, where all age groups trained together at Green Lane and proudly displayed their team flags.
September also saw the beginning of the Lancashire Cup competition for the U12s to U15s. A huge congratulations to our U12s and U13s for their wins against Vale of Lune and Fylde, respectively! The U14s secured a walkover win against Wigan, while, unfortunately, our U15s faced a tough loss against Rochdale.
Meanwhile, our Senior Colts (U18s) competed in the first round of the National Boys Cup at home against Lymm, narrowly missing out on advancing to the second round.
Congratulations also go to a number of our Senior Colts who have made their debuts with our Senior Men’s team, making the starting XV.
*Off the Pitch Updates*
In terms of kit, we have ordered more playing shirts, focusing on the older junior section, and hope to have them delivered soon.
We are also waiting on new deliveries for the Club Shop which again should be arriving soon.
*Calling for Volunteers!*
We are actively seeking volunteers to help with coaching and first aid. All courses are fully funded by the club. If you’re interested in becoming a coach or first aider, please get in touch with Hannah Hague, MJS Chair, at: mjschair@ormskirkrugby.co.uk
From the Seniors
We have had a great start to the season, the coaching team have seen lots of progression transitioning from Pre-Season into the first block of games.
The first competitive game was against De La Salle in the cup, a team that has recently come down from the league above and are very physical and well drilled. They played to their strengths with big ball carriers but we showed true grit and great defensive efforts. Unfortunately we went down by a couple of points but coaches were please with the teams efforts.
We kicked off the league season with a little trip over to the Isle of Man, a nice 5am start for the lads, which didn’t show when the game kicked off. The lads were in the mood to put on a real show with a bonus point win - keeping Vagabonds to just the 2 scores. The lads put in an amazing shift in the 27c heat …a quiet night out for "team bonding" on the Isle of Man was a great finish to the day.
The 2nd game of the league season was at home to Ashton under Lyne. Our dominant scrum forcing the Ashton pack to go un-contested, a few decisions did not go our way towards the end, but the lads dug deep and still walked away with the win. 2 from 2.
The 3rd game was an away trip to Orrell. Conditions were wet and boggy, not the best for our free running backs, and there were lots of dropped balls and missed opportunities. After going down three tries to one a couple of good forward carries got us on the front foot again and we managed to get back in the game.
Orrell went down to 14 men after a straight red.
We brought it back to within a score to only let Orrell have the last laugh in scoring their bonus point. Not the finish we wanted but massive improvement to last year.
Next up is top of the league high flyers Garstang who we will welcome down to Green Lane on 12th, followed by the Oktoberfest.
From the Ladies
Training has been positive with more girls coming down even with the bad weather. It is refreshing to see the amount of new ladies with no experience giving rugby a try at Ormskirk.
We are working hard towards our first home game of the season, which is this Sunday at 2pm.
From the Bar
Our Oktoberfest event on Saturday 12th will feature a range of German draft beers including Lowenbrau, Pilsner, Weissbier, Spaten and Bitburger served in steins for those that want join the vibe.
The kitchen will be offering up a Currywurst meal with a side of chips and pretzels to follow later.
It’s also the Super League Grand Final on TV preceded by our home game against Garstang.
It promises to be a full on day!
